Contamination

East West can assist with sampling and site investigations which leave you with peace of mind that the land you are purchasing is not contaminated.

An environmental due diligence assessment is undertaken to determine any contamination status and therefore the associated liabilities that maybe be transferred with the purchase of the site.

Soil samples are collected and chemically tested to ensure compliance with National Environment Protection Measures (NEPM) guidelines that specify national standards for a variety of environmental issues. East West can conduct:

  • basic contamination assessments
  • phase 1 preliminary contaminated site investigation,
  • phase 2 detailed contaminated site investigation,
  • phase 3 remedial action plans,
  • phase 4 validation and site monitoring, material classification for soil disposal and
  • environmental management plans and pre and post occupation reports.

Revegetation of Stockpiles

East West offers comprehensive soil testing and analyses to determine nutrient, salinity and toxicity status for problem areas and recommend remedial soil treatment programs. We can also provide advice on selection of species appropriate to establish new vegetation.

Groundwater Benchmarking

If groundwater sources such as farm bores are not adequately benchmarked for depth, quality and contaminants, deterioration of an important water supply might go unnoticed. Keeping track of groundwater quality is a very important part of ensuring resource availability and sustainable management. Therefore, it is in the best interest of users to test and treat bore water to ensure the quality is fit for the intended usage. East West can independently sample, monitor and assess your groundwater bores.

Classification

East West is proficient in the classification of materials to Australian Standards for:

  • Composts, soil conditioners and mulches
  • Landscaping Soils and
  • Potting Mixes.

 

AS4454 (2012) is the Australian Standard for composting, soil conditioners and mulches and aims to protect human health, the environment and food quality. It was designed to encourage beneficial and sustainable reuse of materials containing nutrients and organic matter. East West can perform the characterisation of materials to see if they comply with the AS4454. 

AS4419 (2003) is the Australian Standard for producing quality soils for landscaping and gardening use. East West can test for the minimum requirements for general purpose soils, top dressing, topsoil and landscaping mixes for domestic and commercial use. 

AS3743 (2003) is the Australian Standard for potting mixes and this standard specifies physical, biological and chemical labelling requirements for potting mixes to be packaged for resale.

Soil Aggression

Acid sulfate soil (ASS) is the common name given to soils and sediments containing iron sulfides, the most common being pyrite. When exposed to air due to drainage or disturbance, these soils produce sulfuric acid, often releasing toxic quantities of iron, aluminium and heavy metals.

Does your soil suffer from soil aggression?

If you are unsure, East West can test for soil aggression caused by acid sulfate soils. The testing of soil aggression provides you with information about the soil's capability to form a sound foundation for varying concrete purposes. Acid sulfate soils can lead to deterioration of concrete which can lead to expansion and cracking, as well as loss of strength and increased limitations on the elastic properties of concrete.

To prevent physical resistance to aggressive solutions, specifying the mix design combined with using acid sulfate resistant materials, can lead to longevity in the concrete’s construction and therefore longevity in the project itself.

Waste Water Sampling & Monitoring

The reuse of effluent for irrigation purposes has occurred for centuries, and with increasing pressure on potable water supplies, the extent of reuse is increasing.

Effluent from treatment plants, primary production and industrial processes is a valuable source of water and nutrients for reuse applications.

Waste

Any material removed from a site needs testing and classification according to NSW DECC Waste Classification guidelines.

"It is the waste generator’s responsibility to ensure that the sampling and analytical methods used are appropriate for the contaminants being testing for."

At East West we can sample, test and classify any materials for removal outlined in the regulations. We know the rules and can ensure the right classification and disposal options are determined for Excavated Natural Material (ENM), Virgin Excavated Natural Material (VENM) and waste disposal.
